Fall banding for 2007 kicked off on Wednesday 15th August, with Peter Fearon, Kevin Grundy and Nelson Laporte opening the nets for the second annual fall banding effort for AuBO.
Fall banding started with promise, with a flock of twenty-two Baltimore Orioles in net five in one net round, the second-ever Great-crested Flycatcher and the first-ever Yellow-throated Vireo also turning up.
Baltimore Orioles were the most abundant bird of the day on the 16th, but the most stunning bird of the day was an after-hatch year male Blackburnian Warbler. Also banded were the first Swainsons Thrush, six Great-crested Flycatchers, three Scarlet Tanagers and two hatch-year White-throated Sparrows.
The 17th saw a family party of Cedar Waxwings caught in net two, the first Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and Myrtle Warbler but the second-ever Belted Kingfisher stole the show. The first Hermit Thrush, Veery and Purple Finch of the fall were also banded on a quieter day.
The 18th was a quiet day, largely suspected to be related to the return of Kevin Grundy, Mourning and Canada Warblers being the highlight. A Red Crossbill was seen flying north high over the river, Cape May Warblers were seen flitting through the shrubs and six Double-crested Cormorants flew over heading south.
There was a quiet start to the 19th, in between the showers a mixed warbler flock hit net two, with Black & White, Blackburnian, Canada, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Tennessee and Wilsons Warblers as well as the first Northern Waterthrush to be banded this fall. The second Belted Kingfisher of the fall gave Peter his daily exercise, much to the amusement of Kevin.
Persistent heavy rain meant the nets stayed closed on the 20th, but the forecast for the rest of the week looks promising and the team is looking forward to the coming weeks.
